Understanding Sextortion: How to Spot it and Protect Yourself Dealing with online blackmail can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone. Sextortion is a serious crime and understanding how scammers operate is the first step to staying safe.
Here is what you need to know about spotting the signs, protecting your privacy, and getting support.
What is Sextortion? Sextortion is a form of online blackmail. Criminals threaten to share your intimate pictures, videos, or personal information unless you pay them money or do something else against your will. Anyone can be targeted. However, young people aged 15–17 and adults under 30 are statistically most at risk.
How to Spot the Red Flags Scammers often use fake profiles on dating apps, social media, webcams, or adult sites to target people. Be highly cautious if someone you recently met online:
Note: You can still be a victim even if you never shared anything. Scammers sometimes hack accounts or use AI to create fake, edited images or deepfakes that look real.
Important: Intimate Image Abuse is Illegal Even if no money is demanded, sharing or threatening to share your private photos or videos without your consent is illegal. This is known as intimate image abuse or "revenge porn."
How to Protect Yourself
Remember: It is Not Your Fault If you are being targeted or have already fallen victim to sextortion, you are not to blame. You have done nothing wrong, and you should not feel ashamed. Criminals are experts at manipulation.
